107. People of England: Prince William and Catherine Middleton

The wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton seems to have magnetized people from all over the world. Millions of people have been "glued" to their TV screens to watch the beautiful royal wedding.

Prince William was born on June 21, 1982, the elder son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. He received his education in four schools of the UK and completed his degree at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Following his mother's example William was involved into a variety of charities, raising awareness of AIDS/HIV, working with inner-city disadvantaged groups, granting patronage to a charity that assists the homeless people.

106b. People of England: King George VI

George VI was King of the UK and its Dominions from December 11, 1936 until his death in 1952. Being the second son of King George V, he was not considered immediate heir to the throne. His elder brother, Edward VIII, was expected to continue dynasty, but abdicated the throne to marry Ms. Wallis Simpson, an American, twice divorced, of very obscure past and no royal descent. Despite the counsel from the family against this marriage, Edward made a resolute decision to pursue Wallis Simpson rather than the throne, leaving his brother, George, in charge of all the country's affairs.

106. Arranged Marriages: Looking Beyond Traditions

Most people see arranged marriages as a thing of the past, a tradition long forgotten and left behind as something antique. Paintings like the one above by V.V. Pukirev, The Arranged Marriage speak to us through the centuries to remind of the days long gone. I remember writing a description of this painting in the 8th grade, finding the custom repulsive and barbarian, and sympathizing the woman whose eyes had obviously known no sleep and seen no joy. But is it always so dramatic? Some cultures find arranged marriages the best option for building a family. For a number of Indian couples arranged marriages remain customary. A friend of mine, an American, who now lives in India wrote his thoughts about arranged marriages in his blog. Will love follow a marriage arranged by the parents? Each person finds their own answer to the question. What do you think?

105. England Stories Series: Manchester

Manchester is a large city with the population close to half a million people. Greater Manchester (the area around the city) totals over 2 million people. Located in the south-central part of North West England (see the map below), it is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east. Manchester is most of the time thought of as the first industrialized city in the world. The first railway station was built in Manchester, and it is here that the scientists developed the first programmable computer.

104. Frank Abagnale tops the list of 10 most infamous conmen

Have you ever met a conman?* A conman is a swindler who exploits the confidence of his victim. Have you ever fallen prey to the cunning schemes of such a scammer? In Russian we would call this person Остап Бендер (Ostap Bender), named after a famous character from Ilf and Petrov's books. Let us not think, however, that such conmen are only a product of Odessa. There are people like that living all over the world, and one of them, an American, was not only able to cheat money out of thousands of people and be on a payroll at the jobs for which he had never been trained, but after all his courts, jail sentences and escapes, was approached by the FBI with an offer to start working for a government service! Talk about American dream...

103. Dead Man Walking: a Life, a Book, a Movie...

"Funny how we get so exact about time at the end of life and at its beginning. She died at 6:08 or 3:46, we say, or the baby was born at 4:02. But in between we slosh through huge swatches of time - weeks, months, years, decades even."

"The valley of the victimized in this country is wide and deep and growing. In such a sea of pain what can one person do? Better, I decide, to try to help ten real hurting people - or nine, or one - than to be overwhelmed and withdraw and do nothing - or write a paper on The Problem of Evil."

These are some of the extracts from the book by Sister Helen Prejean "Dead Man Walking." It's a real-life story, and the reason why it has been of interest to me is that I live in the area where the events of the book took place. Just several hours away is a world unlike anywhere else in America.

Top 7 resources for Medical Doctors studying English

One of the problems I experience when teaching medical personnel (nurses and doctors) is the choice of resources. On the one hand, physicians need to learn to speak the language (i.e., the materials they use have to be connected with everyday vocabulary). On the other hand, the curriculum for medical doctors, just as many other professionals learning the language as an asset to their job, must include not only general information, but specific materials for medical professionals as well. Below are some resources that I found useful for the doctors I have taught, and I hope they will be helpful to every doctor who is making efforts to learn English.

"Десять Заповедей" удачного письма: часть 2

В предыдущем посте я задалась целью сформулировать основные десять правил грамотного официального письма или имейла на английском языке. Для примера я написала совершенно произвольное послание, в котором отражены основные ошибки автора, и порекомендовала, как нам лучше таких ошибок избегать. В этом посте я завершаю список "Десяти Заповедей".

Итак, вновь прочтем мой имейл: "Hello! I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY COMPUTER TODAY, and so can't have it at 8 PM, so we must have it l8ter? сould you write to me cause I donnow what to do! I can have a lesson today or tomorrow? OK. Good bye!"

"Десять Заповедей" удачного письма: часть 1

Почти за десять лет своей работы преподавателем английского языка, самый сложный аспект, которому мне когда-либо приходилось обучать своих студентов, - это письмо. Наверное потому, что на нашем пост-советском пространстве на курсах английского языка и в вузах письму уделяется, в лучшем случае, десять минут в неделю, и люди не видят в этом никакой пользы.

101. Life in a Bubble house. Part 2

Bubble houses are thought to be the most hurricane-proof structures, and a number of people living in the areas prone to such disasters are choosing dome-shaped houses over "boxes." For most others, however, round homes translate into high class, luxurious lifestyle, expensive whims, and long-term investment. Look at some pictures of the great designer Pierre Cardine's bubble house in the south of France.

100. Life in a Bubble house. Part 1

Imagine living in a bubble... Waking up on the round bed, eating at a round table, walking through round doors and looking out of eye-shaped windows. You may have trouble finding furniture to furnish a house like that or a corner to get your child into a timeout, as is so convenient in other "typical" houses, but, according to Antti Lovag, the architect of the first bubble house, you will feel much more "at home" living exactly in a bubble house. Behind the idea of creating a futuristic-looking abode is the desire to design the space that would most likely fit a human being's physiological and psychological needs.

99. Taxes in the US: Where and How much?

Recently I have come across some information that I thought would be valuable to share with my readers. Not only will this bit enlarge your vocabulary, but it will also introduce you to the tax system in the United States, in particular how much an average American pays taxes and where this money goes. The information was originally presented by David Kendall and Jim Kessler and can be found on thirdway.org and in the February 2011 Reader's Digest issue (p. 76).

According to the 2009 statistics, a US taxpayer receiving a median income of $34,140 a year pays $5,400 in federal income tax and FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Agreement). The money is distributed between the following institutions and offices:
